California Effectiveness Report

A 1985 before-and-after study indicated a 49 percent reduction in run-off-road crashes after shoulder rumble strips were installed along sections of Interstate 15 and 40 in San Bernardino County. Recent follow-up evaluation for freeway segments where shoulder rumble strips have been in-place for 3 or more years indicated an average reduction of 33 percent statewide.
