Roadway Safety Data Activities


This site provides Federal, State and Local agencies with a list of active and developing activities focused on safety data, collection, analysis, and management. These activities were selected to assist roadway safety stakeholders in improving their safety data capabilities and ultimately their capacity for more informed decisions, better targeted safety investments, and improved safety outcomes.

State and Local Data Integration

This activity targets challenges identified by State and Local agencies integrating their safety data. Types of local data integration referenced include: Data collection by the State on all public roads, State and Local data collection based on ownership, Initial data collection by the State on all public roads with data maintenance based on ownership, as well as other types. Products of this activity include: Noteworthy practices, case studies, pilot studies, technical assistance and an information guide to aid agencies in the integration of safety data.

Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE)

MIRE, the Model Inventory of Roadway Elements, is a recommended listing of roadway inventory and traffic elements critical to safety management.

Highway Safety Manual (HSM)

The Highway Safety Manual provides transportation professionals specific, objective strategies to measure the safety-related effects of transportation decisions, allowing them to incorporate these lessons proactively into future decisions. Software tools are available to help implement HSM strategies.

Targeted Technical Assistance

The Roadway Safety Data Program offers two technical assistance programs – the Roadway Data Improvement Program and the Roadway Data Extraction Technical Assistance Program – that are designed to help agencies improve the quality of their roadway data.

Safety Data Case Studies

The Roadway Safety Data Program is working with state and local agencies to develop case studies around roadway safety data collection, management, and analysis issues. These case studies help illuminate both the challenges encountered by agencies on data issues and the solutions they are implementing to address the challenges.

Noteworthy Practices

These practices describe how State and local agencies are implementing innovative approaches to address their roadway safety data needs. A practice is noteworthy if it reduces staff time, saves money and other resources, and/or demonstrates a capacity to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries.
