Roadway Safety Improvements for Older Drivers and Pedestrians

§ 1405

Program Purpose

The purpose of this program is to improve traffic signs and pavement markings in all States in a manner consistent with the recommendations included in the publication of the Federal Highway Administration entitled Guidelines and Recommendations to Accommodate Older Drivers and Pedestrians.

Program Features

This program emphasizes the need for States to address issues resulting from the aging of society. Improvements should be made to enhance the safety and ease of use of the highway system for older persons and for the general population as a whole.

Funding Section 1405 does not include a specific amount of funding for the program. However, such sums as may be necessary to carry out the program are authorized to be appropriated for fiscal years 2005 through 2009.

Federal Share

The Federal share is 100 percent in accordance with 23 USC120(c).

Implementation

States should consider statistics concerning older drivers and pedestrians in their crash data analyses when developing their strategic highway safety plans. Where older driver and pedestrian safety problems are identified, countermeasures should be undertaken based on recommendations in the publication "Guidelines and Recommendations to Accommodate Older Drivers and Pedestrians".
