The program authorizes funding to implement research, deployment, and evaluation of safety technologies and innovations at State and local levels. Also included is deployment of best practices in training, management, design, and planning.

The FHWA Safety Program administers grants, cooperative agreements and contracts with States, other Federal agencies, universities and colleges, private sector entities, and nonprofit organizations to conduct research, development, and technology transfer for innovative safety technologies.
The Safety Innovation Deployment Program is the major source of SAFETEA-LU funds available to conduct all FHWA research on safety innovations and technologies.
Funding is administered by the Office of Safety and the Office of Safety Research, Deployment, and Technology to support FHWA research, deployment, and evaluation of safety innovations and technologies.
For each of fiscal years 2006 through 2009, $12,750,000 is authorized. Actual funding available is expected to be approximately $9.0 million each year.
