Work Zone Safety Grants
§ 1409
Program Purpose
The program authorizes grants to non-profit organizations and not-for-profit organizations to provide training to prevent or reduce highway work zone injuries and fatalities.

Program Features
Work zones remain a dangerous element of the transportation network, representing over 1000 fatalities annually (1,068 for 2004). The Work Zone Safety Grants program authorized in SAFETEA-LU will provide significant financial assistance for highway work zone safety training and guideline development towards improvement of highway work zone safety.
Funding
Authorized to be appropriated from the Highway Trust Fund, to be available as if apportioned under Chapter 1 of 23 USC, except that such funds shall not be transferable.

Eligible Use of Funds
Grants may be used for:
- Highway work zone worker training to prevent injuries and fatalities
- Development of guidelines to prevent work zone injuries and fatalities
- Training for State and local governments, transportation agencies, and other groups implementing these guidelines
Federal Share
The Federal share is 80%.
Implementation
The FHWA Office of Safety will establish and implement a WZ safety grant program. A request for applications (RFA) has been issued through www.grants.gov to solicit grant applicants. Multiple grants are anticipated to be awarded to selected applicants in August 2006.
