VII. Funding Sources

(Federal Register question # 18, AASHTO question #16)

State highway construction funds were most commonly listed as the source of funds for use of uniformed police officers on Federal-aid construction projects. Of 68 responses to this question, 72 percent indicated "highway construction funds." Seven percent indicated their program was funded by "highway administration funds," and 9 percent said "law enforcement appropriation."

A significant number (12 percent) had "other" responses that could not easily be categorized. Vague responses included:

• "The funding comes from several sources. Additional fines are assessed for violations in construction zones and are dedicated to paying officers to patrol work sites. Some Federal funds are used and are administered through the Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving."
