Description of Components of a Typical Work Zone
This figure illustrates an example of the components of a typical work zone.
The figure shows two lanes of a vertical roadway. Upward-pointing arrows in the lanes denote the direction of traffic. Left and right shoulders are shown separated from the lanes by a solid white line.
At the bottom of the figure, three diamond-shaped orange signs are shown on each solid white line. These signs denote Road Work Ahead message signs, Lane Closed Ahead message signs, and Lane Closed Ahead symbol signs. The signs are shown at a distance labeled "1. Advance Warning Area" in advance of a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a yellow directional arrow pointing to the left shown across the shoulder. At this point, a series of orange squares denoting channelizing devices are shown beginning at the left edge of the right shoulder and tapering to the left for a distance labeled "2. Transition Area" to the broken white line between the lanes. The channelizing devices then are shown continuing along the broken white line through a space labeled "Buffer Space (BL)" and ending just beyond a space labeled "Work Space," denoted by a vertical yellow rectangle with diagonal orange lines, which is shown spanning the right lane. The Buffer Space and Work Space make up a space labeled "3. Activity Area."
Beyond the Activity Area, the space is labeled "4. Termination Area." On the solid white line between the shoulder and the right lane at the end of this area, a horizontal rectangular orange sign is shown, denoting an End Road Work sign.
