Additional Training Resources

There are a variety of training resources available; several examples of the resources available are presented here.

  • Designing and Operating Intersections for Safety. This is a 3-day course provided by the National Highway Institute of the Federal Highway Administration (www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov) - Course No. FHWA-NHI-380074. It consists of six modules: Users and Intersections; Diagnostics and Countermeasures: Geometric Design; Unsignalized Intersections; Signalized Intersections; and Case Studies.

  • Intersection Safety Workshop. This is a 1-day course provided by the National Highway Institute of the Federal Highway Administration (www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov) - Course No. FHWA-NHI-380077. This course provides information on ready-to-use, direct-application safety measures for unsignalized and signalized intersections.

  • Signalized Intersection Guidebook Workshop. This is a 1-day course provided by the National Highway Institute of the Federal Highway Administration (www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov) - Course No. FHWA-NHI-380078. This course provides an overview of the "Signalized Intersections: Informational Guide FHWA-HRT-04-091." The guide is a comprehensive document containing methods for evaluating the safety and operations of signalized intersections and tools to remedy deficiencies.

  • Interactive Highway Safety Design Model. This is a 2-day course provided by the National Highway Institute of the Federal Highway Administration (www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov) - Course No. FHWA-NHI-380071. This course instructs highway design project managers, planners, designers, and traffic and safety reviewers in the application of the Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) software and provides guidance on interpretation of the output.

  • Low Cost Safety Improvements Workshop. This is a 3-day course provided by the National Highway Institute of the Federal Highway Administration (www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov) - Course No. FHWA-NHI-380076. This course provides a comprehensive presentation of low-cost, ready-to-use improvements that enhance the safety of highways.

  • Safety Analysis-Signalized Intersections Online Training. This is a 6-hour internet-based available from the Institute of Transportation Engineers Online Learning Gateway (http://www.ite.org/education/clearinghouse/). This online course is a guided tutorial that assists transportation professionals in analyzing crash data and identifying appropriate countermeasures to reduce the frequency of crashes and the fatalities, personal injury and property damage involved.

  • Safety Aspects of Timing Traffic Signals. This is a live interactive web seminar by the American Society of Civil Engineers (https://secure.asce.org/ASCEWebsite/Webinar/ListWebinar.aspx). This seminar will focus on how traffic signals should be timed and operated to maximize safety for the road user. Topics such as signal phasing, timing and detection will be addressed.
