This listing contains breakaway sign supports, mailboxes, and delineators that have been issued an Eligibility Letter by FHWA. The FHWA's Federal-aid eligibility letters are provided as a service to the States and are not a requirement for roadside safety hardware to be eligible for Federal-aid reimbursement. As stated in our eligibility letters, "eligibility for reimbursement under the Federal-aid highway program does not establish approval, certification or endorsement of the device for any particular purpose or use." It is the responsibility of the agency who owns the facility to determine whether or not to use a particular hardware device and how to use it for the particular situation. See AASHTO's Roadside Design Guide and AASHTO's Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware for guidance on selecting the appropriate Test Level (TL) based on traffic using the facility.
These devices have been evaluated in accordance with the AASHTO MASH, NCHRP Report or the 1985 and 1994 AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires and Traffic Signals. Note that breakaway support hardware that was determined to be eligible under either the 1985 or 1994 editions of the AASHTO specifications were determined to meet the NCHRP Report testing guidelines. However, additional testing and evaluation is necessary to meet the current criteria in MASH.
For further information about sign supports, please refer to AASHTO Task Force 13 Guide for Sign Supports, an Online Guide to Sign Support Hardware.
