The bars are stacked such that the first time period is on top and the second time period is on the bottom for each emphasis area. The emphasis areas are sorted from highest number of fatalities to the lowest. Most sets of bars show a reduction in fatalities between the two time periods. The emphasis areas in descending order are, Alcohol and/or Drug Involved, Run off the Road, Speeding Involved, Young Drivers, Unrestrained Occupant, Distracted Driver Involved, Intersection Related, Unlicensed Driver Involved, Opposite Direction Collision, Motorcyclist, Pedestrian, and Heavy Truck. The number of fatalities assigned to each emphasis area range from over 800 for Alcohol and/or Drug Involved, to less than 200 for Heavy Truck.
