Integrating Safety in the Rural Transportation Planning Process

Figure 3.8 East Central Intergovernmental Association Crash Density Data – Long Description

Figure 3.8 shows a crash density map for the City of Clinton, which is a jurisdiction in the East Central Intergovernmental Association planning area. The map depicts crash clusters in the City, showing the worst road segments. The purpose of the map is to demonstrate that geographic information system mapping is a useful tool for Regional Planning Organizations to visualize the safety issues, but the information also can be used to develop safety goals and objectives. For instance, based on the map, a planner could develop a safety goal, "Reduce fatalities and serious injuries that result from motor vehicle crashes," and an objective, "Address high-crash clusters by conducting road safety audits and identify crash-reduction strategies."
