Integrating Safety in the Rural Transportation Planning Process

Figure 3.4 Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission (Virginia) Spatial Analysis – Long Description

Figure 3.4 shows a map of Fauquier County, which is part of the planning area for the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission in Virginia. The purpose of the map is to show that geographic information system mapping is a useful tool for Regional Planning Organizations to show the public, stakeholders, and elected officials where safety issues exist in a region. This information can then be used to conduct road safety audits, implement low-cost countermeasures, or complete further studies. This particular map uses dots to depict which intersections in the region have safety deficiencies. Clusters of dots indicate intersections with the worst problems. The map also shows the primary road segments in the region and highlights the ones with safety deficiencies.
