Roadway Lighting

Roadway lighting is a means to increase visibility for drivers and other roadway users. Properly designed roadway lighting allows road users to quickly assess roadway conditions and creates a safe environment within the roadway vicinity. New technologies to reduce the long-term costs of lighting need to be balanced with understanding and address the needs of the road user.

Funding Assistance

  • Eligibility of 23 USC 120 (c) for Highway Lighting
    This FHWA memorandum addresses the eligibility of highway lighting for 100 percent Federal funding under 23 USC 120 (c) [Increased Federal Share for Certain Safety Projects]. The memorandum was issued in December 2005.
